Hurricane

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 23, 2008, 9:57 AM
Hurricane is expect to make land fall between Corpus Christi & Brownsville Texas sometime today. Most of my family (including my son, mother, grandma, brothers, nieces & nephews etc.) all live in this area. They have all decided to ride out the storm in their respective homes.

They evacuated Padre Island 2 days ago. The hospitals & detention centers in Brownsville were also evacuated. The National Guard has been bought in. People are being asked to board up, & move to higher ground (the Valley sits below sea level).

The water temp in the Gulf of Mexico is dropping at a continuous rate, not a good sign.

As of yesterday, the sun was still shining in the Rio Grande Valley & nothing seems out of place, so it is hard for people to believe this was really coming.

I do give thanks to the weather people for letting people know with plenty of time.

I called my son to convince him to get out of there or to at least start stocking up water, canned goods & to water-proof important stuff (dog-food for his new pet) & he poopooed my suggestions. He thinks I exaggerate & am just a worrier (which I am, esp. when my children's safety is concerned). But anyone who is old enough to remember the damage left by past hurricanes, knows how incredibly frightening & deadly these things can be.

So please...send your prayers his way. His name is Brandon.
With love, Gloria

Stole this idea from Maria's :iconcozycomfycouch: poll

" What have you learned in Life?"
A. Nothing
B. Lots (please explain with links)I have learned:
We are all interconnected. What we do has a Ripple Effect on everything that exists.
That the things we thought would last forever can easily be destroyed by man's greed
That we should not be sheep but must learn to think for ourselves
That women are often blamed for men's stupidity
To trust in Love
To have faith in God
Motherhood is a double edged sword, with great joy comes great pain
That we must do certain things in moderation

That life is too short & our expiration date may be coming up sooner then we thought so to do all the things we had hoped to do NOW!

That we shouldn't take our life (or those of our loved ones), our sight , our hearing ,
our sense of taste or ability to communicate for granted .
That the air we breathe ,the water we drink are precious things
That Life is a wonderful journey someday are rough seas others are smooth sailing
That we will continue into the unknown
That we must learn to forgive ourselves as well as others
That IS hardest thing to do.

Gloria/glunac :iconglunac: is featuring Mayisha's :iconfly0away0: 10 "Pay it forward" entries.

The rules were the 1st 10 people to comment on her "Pay it Forward" journal got featured in the next journal (3 entries chosen by the person doing the journal), but the catch was you have to "pay it forward" by doing the same in your next journal page.

As Myaisha didn't have a subscription, I volunteered to show her features.

If you comment on this journal you will not be featured or have to "pay it forward" so comment away. Sorry there was some confusion about this.

Happy 4th of July

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 3, 2008, 12:53 PM
"Pay it Forward" Movie trailer on YouTube [link]

I am so happy cause it rained. The ground was so hard & dry that I was worried about fireworks setting the yard waste piles on fire. They just do not decompose very fast around here even though I've added extra bacteria to them & the yard waste people did NOT pick up my bin. My neighbor had problems with them picking up his ...this week they picked up his but NOT mine.

Yes, I am paranoid about fires, but already I've had to stomp one out...someone had thrown a cigarette butt into a flower bed with wood chipped on it & it was smoking & smoldering. I tried stomping it out, but that didn't work so ended up pouring all my water bottle on it & that seemed to help.

Next week, my journal page will be lent out to Mayisha :iconfly0away0: so she can do her pay it forward with thumbs...

Hope everyone has a safe & happy 4th of July!

Home Again /

I have been in Germany for the past several weeks & am home again. The yard is a disaster, the pantry needs restocking & I have a suitcase full of dirty clothes to deal with; so if you don't hear from me for a few days...I am just exhausted.

p/s Boy, is it nice to sleep in my own bed again with my own fluffy soft pillow.

It's a good way to promote other people's art & make new friends or revisit old ones.

Ducky Lessons

Journal Entry: Fri May 30, 2008, 2:09 AM
So why ducks?
Was giving a painting lesson to 3 people, something I had never done before, as I prefer the one-on-one approach. But the students were reluctant to have center stage & grouped up on me.
I asked each to bring 5 picture idea of things they liked or things that made them happy & could envision hanging on their walls; plus, 2 different canvas sizes. Two of these students, showed up with outlines already drawn onto their canvas(es).

When I asked why they had chosen these subjects; one answered cause it looked easy. (shakes head in sadness)
She had chosen an outline illustration of a duck head . A duck she had never seen before & was not even sure it was a real live duck as opposed to just a cartoon duck. (shakes head & sighs)

During the 2 hr. lesson, I failed at getting her to relax. Instead she insisted in copying it just as it was done on the illustration. Though she was precise, the result was disappointing (& she could not understand 'Why?").

I sent her an email, explain what I though we could try changing to make it more life-like & less flat. Then I offered her a 2 hr. one-on-one art session (at her convenience). Eventually, she was brave enough to give it another go.

First thing I did was get rid of that illustration & have her envision a live duck swimming in the water.

Next I found her reference photos from my bird books, on Webshots & dA to use as reference material. Turns out not only was a "Ring-necked duck" a real duck but they are frequent visitors to this part of WA.

The results were an amazing transformation: from a lifeless duck head silhouette floating on a canvas, to a work of art I would have gladly hung on my walls & added to my collection.

That lesson started me on my journey to drawing ducks & water fowl. Which I will be submitting soon.

P/S One of the other students had taken watercolor lessons before. Her painting was light & airy & almost translucent; very reminiscent of that medium. Her personality & confident shone through her piece, other then supplies & suggestions on brushstrokes to use; she didn't need my help. It was a perfect piece ready to be hung.

The other had never painted or drawn before (other then a few primitive tattoos). I had him use the palette knife & though he looked scared to be begin with such a tool, he trusted me & was so attentive & willing to learn that he quickly moved past his fear & just enjoyed the freedom of the movement that the palette knife can bring. His finished piece "WOWED me!" As he loves fishing, he painted a salmon with a bit of a trout flair to it. It's simply gorgeous!
